Bank Holidays On The Costa Del Sol

There are 14 bank holidays that take place along the Costa del Sol and in Andalucia. This is the maximum number of bank holidays a municipality can have. These are usually made up of 10 national bank holidays, 2 regional bank holidays and 2 local bank holidays. Regional autonomies or local municipalities may adopt different bank holidays to fit in with local customs and traditions.

Local bank holidays vary in their dates from town to town and will usually fall on the day of the patron saint of that town. Many of the coastal towns will have a bank holiday for San Juan, a celebration of the summer solstice or for the Virgen del Carmen, protector of the seas/fishermen.

Throughout Spain, a bridge day is likely to be taken if a bank holiday falls on either a Tuesday or a Thursday known as ‘haciendo puente’. An additional day off is taken on a preceding Monday or a following Friday in order to make a longer weekend. Often shops and schools will have a haciendo puente.

Bank Holiday Dates (2015)

All bank holidays fall on set dates in Spain with the exception of Easter, Semana Santa, the holy week. This normally occurs immediately after the first full moon of spring. If a bank holiday falls on a Sunday, the bank holiday is observed the following day. This is sometimes applied to bank holidays that fall on a Saturday, they will be observed on the Monday immediately after.
