Best ever May on the Costa del Sol

May 2015 was the best ever May in history with more than 520,000 visitors enjoying the area which equated to 1.8 million overnight stays. The number of visitors increased by 6.8% and the number of overnight stays increased by 4% compared to 2014.The figures were released by the INE (National Statistics Institute) and show the figures were higher than those registered in 2008 which was the previous best for the month of May.

The Costa del Sol has enjoyed more than 3 consecutive years of growth not only in visitor numbers and overnight stays but also in terms of global impact tourism has had in the province of Malaga. It is anticipated that the tourism sector on the Costa del Sol will see a 5% increase on 2014 which was a record breaking year itself.

Andalucia saw 3.1 million visitors before May, the first time the region has achieved this. This compared to the same period in 2014 (Jan – May) is a 7.7% increase. The growth that has been enjoyed by the region is the largest growth of any other sun and sand destination.

Best summer on the horizon

There is an estimated 5.6 million tourists expected to visit the Costa del Sol between June and September of this year which would mean that 2015 would be best year the region would have ever had. This figure is 4.5% greater than for the same period in 2014 according to the Costa del Sol Tourism Board. The tourist board stated that the increase was partly down to the fact national tourism is on the up as Spanish families start to begin to feel more confident in the economy and their spending power.

Airlines have 69,300 commercial flights during the summer months which should help the Costa del Sol achieve its target figure of 10.5 million tourists for 2015.

July brings the start of the summer holidays and the Malaga Costa del Sol airport is set to welcome its first flood of visitors.
It is anticipated that 700,000 passengers will arrive on around 4,000 flights between 27th June and July 6th. It is expected that the two busiest days of this busy week will be both Saturdays.

€500 million property investment by US firm

An American private-equity investment company has announced that it is to invest more than 500 million euros into the Spanish housing market. Their aim is to fill a gap created by the ever increasing demand for Spanish property.

In certain areas of Spain there is still an oversupply of unsold homes but Lonestar Funds have identified certain areas where demand for property is driven by foreign buyers as well as Spanish ones. The man behind the company said that he had already begun to invest in land in Spain for housing developments. He added that in certain areas stock is beginning to run out and we aim to meet the demand.

Spain’s property crisis has been well publicised but the corner has been turned and the property market is on the road to recovery with foreign transactions on the increase as well as foreign investors. Lonestar plan to purchase land in Madrid, Barcelona, the Balearics and along coastal areas such as the Costa del Sol.

Thomson dock in Malaga

Thomson cruises delivered great news for Malaga Port by announcing that Thomson Spirit will be based in the port from May to October.

It is estimated that 56,000 passengers will travel to the Costa del Sol to embark on 26 cruises using Malaga as their base port.

Thomson used Malaga port for seven cruises in March and April of last year and was pleased with the results and standards on offer. The cruises will primarily be aimed at British tourists but will also be promoted to residents of the Costa del Sol and Spain.
