San Pedro Boulevard
December saw the opening of the brand new boulevard in San Pedro after 16 months of work that cost €6 million.
The project funded by a consortium of six local firms has transformed the image of the area and improved facilities for the local residents. The area that has been transformed was once the busy maid road area which had been taken underground and covers 55,000 square metres.
The aim of the project, known as the San Pedro Bulevar, was to create a meeting point for local people as well as being an attraction for tourists that would provide a much needed boost to local businesses.
Previously the northern side of the town, the most densely populated, was separated from the south side of the town which comprises of residential developments and the Paseo Maritimo (beachside promenade), by the N340 coastal road. When the San Pedro tunnel opened in 2012, this began the project to bring the two sides of the town together.
On the new ‘Bulevard’ there is; an ice skating rink, an amphitheatre, bicycle lane, green areas of nearly 37,000 shrubs, 470 trees and over 100 plants, a raised walkway and footbridge over 300 metres long, 6 children’s parks, 3,440 square metres of ponds and waterways, 3 bars of which 2 are already open, tourist information office, over 300 car parking spaces and the entire area has Wifi. Around 800 square metres have been set aside for a food market.
The mayor of the town said “This is a huge step to bring San Pedro in to the 21st century and we plan to expand the Bulevar to the town centre”
